Holmes & Watson in Troy will become Irish pub

Holmes & Watson Ltd., a downtown Troy fixture since the late 1970s, will close April 13 and reopen as Finnbar’s, an Irish pub. Sean Costello, the longtime manager of Cafe Hollywood on Lark Street, will open the pub with his wife, Megan, at 450 Broadway in Troy.

The couple bought the building and the business, and Costello said that following renovations he hopes to reopen by June 1.

Don’t expect dramatic changes to the building. Costello said he loves the building as it is because of its character and history. It has operated as a restaurant since 1865, he said. The menu at Finnbar’s will include fish and chips, shepherd’s pie and burgers.

The new business will be named for Sean and Megan’s toddler son, Finnbar. Planned renovations are a new draft system to accommodate at least 24 taps for microbrews; a new coat of paint for 450 and 452 so the colors match and a new coat of paint for the banquet room upstairs. Costello said he would like to install dart boards on one wall of the second floor and start a steel-tipped dart league.
