On a recent rainy evening, stepping into a classic, neighborhood Irish pub seemed perfectly fitting. Indeed it was, and rain or not, you’ll always feel By Teresa Barile warm and welcome at Paul Fogarty’s fine establishment which opened more than 13 years ago. With great drinks and food specials each night, all your favorite sports games on the 18 muted screens, and an awesome staff that includes the effervescent server Amanda, a night (or afternoon) at Mc- Cann’s will be the highlight of your week and put you in a great mood.
Get your attitude adjusted with a hand-shaken martini, such as the pineapple upside, mixed with vodka, pineapple juice and liqueur. The blueberry pomegranate is a popular martini too, made with fruit-infused vodka. My friend had a classic, dry martini with olives and deemed it smooth and crisp. Each night offers beer and snack specials to please the crowds that feature brews such as Bud Light, Miller Light and Coors light for $3 on Mondays. Tuesday is 2-for Tuesday drinks, and martini madness with $5.50 martinis all night. Thursdays, you and your friends can enjoy a pitcher of domestic beer and their hot spicy wings for just $15.00. On Sundays, the same price gets you a pitcher of beer and their juicy sliders. The busy barmen have the taps flowing with Guinness, Harp, Stella Artois, Newcastle, Magner’s Cider and more. Ladies get half price drinks on Wednesday nights from 8pm until 1am and there’s always free billiards and darts for a friendly game.
McCann’s has some of the best pub food around. Everything is made from fresh ingredients, on the spot, and it’s all served hot on white china plates. Enjoy appetizers or a full meal at the bar or at one of the bar-height tables. We started with a crock of outrageously delicious chili, chock full of beans and meat, topped with cheese and onions, if you like ($4.25).
Chicken quesadillas are large enough to have as an entrée and are filled with tender chicken and melted cheese, served with chunky salsa and creamy sour cream ($8.95). The steak tidbits is one of the most popular appetizers, with good reason. Top quality Angus steak is cooked to order then cut into bite-sized cubes and served over garlic bread with melted mozzarella ($11.95). This steak is very tender and juicy and the entrée-sized portion offers plenty for lunch the next day. The Buffalo wings are tender and juicy and can be ordered as spicy as you like them. Mc- Cann’s “sliders” are beef mini burgers with bacon and your choice of cheese. They make a nice snack and are perfect for sharing. The crab cakes are also bite-sized and full of sweet crabmeat, with six to an order. Share a generous order of nachos with gooey cheese and toppings, guacamole and sour cream. McCann’s Sampler offers an assortment of their best appetizers to please everyone. I hear the onion soup is excellent, served in a bubbling crock. McCann’s freshly tossed Caesar salad has crunchy croutons and Parmesan dressing.
Dinner entrees include burgers, chicken dishes, steak, pasta and more, so there is something for everyone. My chicken cordon bleu was served piping hot and offered a generous portion of tender chicken breast, ham and Swiss cheese all wrapped up and gently sautéed, then topped with a light mushroom sauce. House made, creamy mashed potatoes, rice or French fries accompany this dish, along with veggies.
Chicken parmigiana is a house favorite, and the chicken teriyaki is tender with a sweet and savory teriyaki sauce, served over rice ($12.95). Pasta cooked just right is topped with fresh tomato and basil sauce, or tossed with grilled chicken and vegetables. Cut into a juicy, sizzling, 12-ounce New York Shell steak with crispy fries for a satisfying dinner.
For lunch, dinner or late night munchies, McCann’s burgers are a great choice, made with fresh ground beef, turkey or veggie, topped with your favorite cheese, bacon and more. There are plenty of sandwiches and wraps on offer, made with plain or whole wheat tortillas. The Cajun chicken wrap is one of the most popular for its zesty seasoning, lettuce, tomato, bacon and mayonnaise. The California wrap is made with grilled chicken, guacamole, lettuce and tomato. A classic BLT sandwich or a chicken club will hit the spot, along with a pint of your favorite brew. You can even have breakfast, served all day.
Tonight is Thanksgiving Eve and McCann’s welcomes you to prime yourself for the holiday weekend. This is a place to meet up with friends, or make some new ones, seven days a week. They’re open from 11am to 4am, and the kitchen stays open until 2am, serving snacks and meals. There are food and drink specials every night and all the games you can watch. Free billiards and darts too! Check out their other location in Massapequa too. Every night’s a good night at McCann’s. Cheers!
