Christy’s digging deep for Christmas

In the coming weeks the Community Soup Kitchen of New Haven (CSK) will team up with Christy’s Irish Pub for its annual fundraiser once more. Last year, the soup kitchen provided meals for 65, 715 people and hopes to feed over 70,000 this coming holiday season.

The inimitable Santa Christy will be on hand once more this year, as Christy's of New Haven raises much-needed cash for the local soup kitchen.

To help raise vital funds to support the kitchen’s services, Christy’s will host its fifth annual CSK benefit on Thursday December 1. The pub raised $12,000 last year on the night itself, and also garnered extremely generous contributions from local corporations, law firms and unions.

“The lingering recession, climbing food prices, long-delayed kitchen renovations and an economy-driven downturn in donations are challenging CSK’s ability to provide this most basic need,” said soup kitchen coordinator David O’Sullivan. “We’re trying to keep up.”

Helping the group do just that is New Haven’s most instantly recognizable Santa, Kilkenny man Christy Mulhall. The proprietor of Christy’s, he feels he owes the town something.

“This year we’ve already raised $4,000, including hefty donations from AT&T and United Illuminating,” Mulhall said. “I’m always amazed by the generosity of people in New Haven, especially at Christmas time.”

Mulhall explained that he hosts the fundraiser every year because when he was a boy in Kilkenny, his aunt in New Haven would collect clothing and ship it to him and his ten siblings.

“It was fantastic to watch the postman coming down the road on his bicycle with a big cardboard box,” he said. “There was nobody else in the neighborhood getting a big parcel from America. This is my opportunity to give back to New Haven.”

The benefit will take place at Christy’s Irish Pub, 261 Orange Street, New Haven CT from 5-9 pm. The event will include hors d’oeuvres, drink specials, a prize drawing and an appearance by Santa Christy, bearing gifts.

No specific ticket price has been set. Attendees are instead invited to donate what they can, with a suggestion of $15. Contributions will be received at Christy’s at any time, and can also be mailed to the Community Soup Kitchen of New Haven, 84 Broadway, New Haven CT 06511 (checks payable to Community Soup Kitchen of New Haven).
